Which is better for undergraduate research: USC or Caltech?

I’m a high school junior interested in studying a STEM field and getting involved in research as an undergraduate. I’m comparing USC and Caltech, and research opportunities are one of the most important factors in my decision. Which school generally provides better access to meaningful undergraduate research and faculty mentorship?

For a student whose top priority is close faculty access and making research a central part of the undergraduate experience, Caltech is the more natural fit. Its very small undergraduate population, research-intensive culture, and Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF) program make it unusually feasible to build sustained relationships with professors and work on original projects early in college. Research is woven into the academic environment across science and engineering.

Caltech particularly suits students who want a highly focused, math- and science-driven campus where peers are similarly invested in technical problem-solving. The tradeoff is that its academic offerings and research ecosystem are narrower in scale than USC’s, and the workload can be exceptionally demanding. Students should be comfortable with an intense STEM curriculum rather than looking for a broad university experience.

USC’s engineering, natural sciences, medicine, computing, public health, and cinematic and technology-related programs create many possible research directions. Its Los Angeles location also supports connections to hospitals, industry, and nearby research organizations. Undergraduates can join faculty labs, pursue summer research, and seek funded opportunities, but access is less automatic because USC is far larger and lab opportunities vary substantially by department and professor.

For pure undergraduate research mentorship in traditional STEM fields, Caltech has the clearer built-in advantage. USC may be more compelling for someone who wants to combine STEM research with fields such as entrepreneurship, health, policy, business, design, or media, and who is prepared to proactively contact faculty and pursue opportunities across a much larger university.
