Is Georgetown or Boston University more prestigious for preparing students for law school?

The biggest practical tradeoff is Georgetown’s Washington, D.C. access and nationally recognized political/legal network versus Boston University’s strong academic environment and Boston-based opportunities, potentially at a different overall cost. For a student targeting law school, Georgetown carries somewhat more prestige in government, public policy, international affairs, and legal-adjacent circles. Its location also makes internships during the academic year with federal agencies, Congress, advocacy organizations, think tanks, and law firms unusually accessible.

Boston University is also a well-regarded national university with substantial strengths for future law applicants, especially through rigorous coursework, research, and access to Boston’s legal, nonprofit, health-policy, and business communities. BU’s proximity to courts, firms, hospitals, and public-interest organizations can support strong internships, and its large alumni base is valuable in the Northeast. Neither school provides a guaranteed edge in law-school admissions simply because of its name; a high GPA, strong LSAT score, demanding but manageable course selection, meaningful experiences, and persuasive recommendations will matter more.

Georgetown has the clearer reputation-and-network advantage for a student who specifically wants exposure to law, politics, public service, or policy while in college. That said, the advantage is not large enough to justify taking on substantially more debt or choosing an academic and social environment where you are less likely to thrive. Between these two, Georgetown is the more prestigious option for law-oriented networking, but BU can lead to equally strong law-school outcomes when it allows you to earn higher grades, build sustained involvement, and graduate with less financial pressure.
