Boston University or Georgetown for pre-law: which is better?

Georgetown usually has the stronger edge for pre-law, mainly because of its location, political and legal ecosystem, and access to internships tied directly to government, policy, and law. Being in Washington, DC gives Georgetown students unusually direct exposure to courts, federal agencies, think tanks, Capitol Hill, and law-related nonprofits. Georgetown also has a long-established reputation in government, international affairs, political science, and public policy, which can be especially helpful if your legal interests connect to those areas.

That said, Boston University is also a very solid pre-law option, and it may be the better fit if you prefer a more traditional urban campus experience in Boston and want strong academics without Georgetown’s especially politics-centered atmosphere. BU offers excellent opportunities through Boston’s legal market, nearby courts, and internships, and it has strong departments that can feed into law school preparation. Law schools do not require a specific major, so your GPA, LSAT, writing ability, and recommendations will matter more than the school name alone.

If the question is purely which school gives the stronger overall pre-law environment, I would lean Georgetown. The combination of DC access, a deeply embedded policy and legal culture, and a powerful alumni network in law-adjacent fields makes it especially compelling for aspiring lawyers. Georgetown can be particularly strong if you want exposure to constitutional law, international law, public service, or political institutions before law school.

If your main goal is maximizing law school admission outcomes, the better choice is the school where you can earn the highest GPA, build close faculty relationships, and take on meaningful writing-heavy and analytical work. So Georgetown is probably the stronger pre-law ecosystem, but BU remains an excellent path and could be the smarter choice if you would thrive there more academically and personally.
