Is Boston University worth choosing over Harvard?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Harvard offers a smaller, highly resourced undergraduate environment with an unusually broad national and global network, while Boston University offers a larger, more professionally oriented urban experience where students can build careers through Boston internships from the start. Harvard’s need-based financial aid can make it less expensive than BU for many families, whereas BU may be compelling when its scholarship or aid package produces a clearly lower net cost.

Academically, Harvard gives undergraduates exceptional flexibility across the liberal arts and access to research, faculty, and courses across a wide range of fields. Its residential House system also creates a more defined campus community after the first year. BU has major strengths in fields with direct professional pathways, including communications, business, engineering, health-related areas, hospitality, and the arts, and its Boston location makes semester-time internships especially accessible.

The student experience feels meaningfully different. Harvard is centered in Cambridge, with a traditional residential college structure and a smaller undergraduate population. BU stretches along Commonwealth Avenue in Boston; it can feel more independent, city-integrated, and fast-paced, but students may need to be more intentional about finding community and navigating a larger student body.

BU is worth choosing over Harvard when it offers substantially better affordability, a program that clearly matches your goals, or a student culture in which you know you will participate more fully. Absent a major cost difference or a distinctly better BU program fit, Harvard is the stronger value because its aid, academic breadth, research access, and long-term network are difficult to match.
