Is Northeastern or UC San Diego more affordable for college?

The biggest practical tradeoff is residency: UC San Diego is often far less expensive for a California resident, while Northeastern may become competitive only when its need-based aid or merit scholarship significantly reduces its private-university price. For non-California residents, UCSD’s added nonresident tuition can narrow the gap considerably. Housing is costly at both campuses, but Boston living expenses and Northeastern’s housing market can make its total cost of attendance especially high.

UCSD’s published cost is built around University of California tuition and campus living costs. California residents benefit from the state-supported tuition rate and are also more likely to be eligible for UC and California-based need-based aid. Out-of-state students should not assume that UCSD will provide enough institutional aid to offset nonresident tuition; UC campuses primarily direct their need-based resources toward eligible California residents.

Northeastern charges private-school tuition to all students, so its sticker price is typically higher than UCSD’s in-state price. However, Northeastern can offer need-based aid and, for some applicants, merit scholarships. Its co-op program can also let students earn income and gain experience, although co-op earnings should not be treated as guaranteed tuition coverage and some students take five years to graduate.

For most California residents without an unusually strong Northeastern aid package, UC San Diego will cost less overall. For an out-of-state student, compare each school’s official net price calculator and final aid offer line by line, including grants, loans, work-study, health insurance, travel, and whether the award is renewable for every year. Northeastern can be the lower-net-price option only when its grant or scholarship is large enough to overcome its higher tuition and Boston-area living costs.
