Vanderbilt vs. Lehigh for a Finance Career

I’m a high school senior deciding between Vanderbilt and Lehigh and am interested in studying finance. I want to understand which school generally offers stronger preparation and recruiting opportunities for a career in investment banking or financial services.

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Lehigh offers a more structured undergraduate finance education, while Vanderbilt offers a broader national brand and a somewhat wider reach in highly selective finance recruiting. At Lehigh, finance is an established College of Business major, so courses, peers, clubs, and career programming are naturally organized around business careers. At Vanderbilt, students pursuing banking commonly major in economics or related fields and build their finance profile through electives, student investment organizations, internships, and networking rather than through a traditional undergraduate business-school curriculum.

For investment banking, both schools can place driven students into internships and full-time analyst roles, especially with early networking and strong technical preparation. Lehigh’s Investment Management Group and business community can also provide practical experience and a peer network focused on finance.

Vanderbilt’s advantages are its strong overall academic reputation, national alumni reach, and access to recruiting beyond finance if your interests change. It can be particularly attractive for students aiming at major banks, elite boutiques, or financial-services roles in multiple cities. The lack of an undergraduate finance major is not a barrier in banking, where economics, math, engineering, and other rigorous majors are all common, but it does require more initiative to seek out accounting, valuation, and interview preparation.

For a finance career with investment banking as the central goal, Vanderbilt has the slight edge in overall recruiting upside and national mobility, provided you are comfortable creating your own finance-focused path. Lehigh is the more compelling choice if you value a clearly defined finance curriculum, a business-school environment, and a concentrated Northeast network.
