Is the University of Minnesota or Fordham better for preparing for law school?

The biggest practical tradeoff is Fordham’s day-to-day access to New York City legal internships versus Minnesota’s broader public-university resources and potentially better value, especially for an in-state student. Both universities can prepare a student very well for law school because neither requires a formal “pre-law” major; GPA, LSAT performance, strong writing, and meaningful experience will matter far more than the school’s label. Fordham’s New York location can make it easier to pursue semester-time work with courts, legal aid organizations, nonprofits, government offices, and law firms, while Minnesota offers the scale of a major research university in the Twin Cities and proximity to the University of Minnesota Law School.

Fordham may be especially appealing if you want an urban campus experience and expect to use NYC actively for internships and networking during the academic year. Its smaller undergraduate environment can also make advising and faculty relationships feel more accessible. Attending Fordham as an undergraduate does not create an automatic advantage in admission to Fordham Law.

Minnesota can be the smarter platform when it is substantially less expensive, particularly because law school is costly and minimizing undergraduate debt preserves flexibility later. The university has extensive majors, research opportunities, student organizations, and Twin Cities internship options, so a proactive student can build an equally compelling law-school profile there. Its larger size means you may need to take more initiative in finding mentors and opportunities.

Choose the University of Minnesota if it is meaningfully more affordable or you prefer a large flagship campus; saving money while earning an excellent GPA is a powerful law-school strategy. Choose Fordham when the additional cost is manageable and you are genuinely prepared to take advantage of New York’s legal and public-interest opportunities throughout college.
