The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus selectivity: Purdue Engineering has a much larger, more specialized recruiting ecosystem for traditional engineering roles, while Duke’s Pratt School offers smaller cohorts, closer access to faculty and career advising, and strong connections to the Research Triangle and Duke’s broader professional network. Purdue’s employer presence is especially deep in areas such as mechanical, aerospace, civil, electrical, computer, and industrial engineering. Duke can be especially attractive for students who want engineering paired with entrepreneurship, health technology, data science, public policy, or a possible move into consulting, product management, or graduate school.

For direct engineering job placement, Purdue has the clearer edge in breadth of recruiting. Its size, engineering reputation, large career fairs, alumni base in industry, and longstanding relationships with major technical employers create many opportunities for internships, co-ops, and full-time roles. A student pursuing a conventional engineering path, particularly in manufacturing-heavy or aerospace-related industries, is likely to find Purdue’s recruiting infrastructure unusually practical and extensive.

Duke students also place very well, but the experience can be more individualized and less centered on a massive engineering-only hiring market. Duke’s location near Raleigh-Durham helps with technology, biotech, health-care, and startup opportunities, while its overall university brand can be valuable for cross-functional roles. Students may need to be more proactive in seeking highly specialized engineering employers that recruit heavily at larger public technical universities.
