Duke vs. Emory for Global Health: Which Undergraduate Program Is a Better Fit?

For a student whose priority is undergraduate global health coursework plus regular access to major public-health organizations, Emory is the more compelling fit. Its Atlanta location places students near the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, The Carter Center, and a dense network of health-focused nonprofits.

Emory’s Global Health, Culture, and Society program approaches health through social science, ethics, history, and policy, while related science and public-health courses can add technical depth. That structure works especially well for students interested in health equity, community health, infectious disease policy, or the social determinants of health rather than a purely biomedical path.

The Atlanta public-health ecosystem is the clearest experiential advantage. Students can seek internships, research roles, and volunteer work with organizations addressing refugee health, global development, disease prevention, and health communication during the academic year, not only in the summer. Proximity does not guarantee a position, but it makes sustained local involvement much more realistic.

Duke remains excellent, particularly for a student drawn to faculty-led global health research, a more science-intensive route, and structured international engagement through the Duke Global Health Institute and DukeEngage. Its global health major and research culture are substantial strengths. But Emory’s combination of Atlanta-based public-health institutions provides a more immediately integrated undergraduate foundation for the interests described.
