Emory vs. Northwestern for Journalism: Which Offers Better Undergraduate Preparation?

Northwestern offers substantially stronger undergraduate preparation for a student who is committed to journalism. Its Medill School has a dedicated undergraduate journalism curriculum built around reporting, writing, editing, ethics, audience engagement, and multimedia storytelling.

The biggest differentiator is the structure of the training. At Northwestern, journalism is an established major with faculty whose work is centered on the field and coursework that moves from foundational reporting into specializations such as investigative reporting, visual journalism, sports media, health and science reporting, and data-driven work. That sequence gives students a clearer path to building clips, practical skills, and professional habits than an interest pursued mainly through electives and extracurriculars.

Northwestern’s Evanston location also places students close to Chicago’s large news and media market. Students can pursue internships and reporting opportunities at local and national outlets while in school, and Medill’s alumni network is especially extensive in journalism and adjacent media careers. The school’s professional connections are a meaningful advantage for both summer internships and early job searches.

Emory can still support a student interested in writing and media through its liberal arts curriculum, Atlanta-based opportunities, and student publications such as The Emory Wheel. But Emory does not provide the same dedicated undergraduate journalism school, major, or professionally sequenced reporting curriculum as Medill. For journalism specifically, Northwestern provides the more direct, hands-on, and career-connected preparation.
