University of Maryland vs. Drexel: Which offers better career preparation?

For a computer science student whose top priority is structured work experience before graduation, Drexel offers the more career-focused setup.

The biggest distinction is that Drexel makes practical employment a central part of the academic model rather than an opportunity students must largely arrange around classes. That can be especially valuable for securing a first full-time role in a competitive field.

Maryland also provides strong CS career access, particularly through its location near Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and a large concentration of federal agencies, contractors, research organizations, and technology employers. UMD students can pursue internships through career fairs, campus recruiting, faculty research, and the university’s extensive regional network. Its computer science program has strong name recognition and can open excellent opportunities, but internships are not as systematically embedded in the degree structure as Drexel’s co-op.

Drexel’s approach does come with a tradeoff: students need to manage alternating academic and work cycles. But for someone explicitly prioritizing employer relationships, guided internship access, and graduating with meaningful full-time experience, that structure is a real advantage.
