Is Maryland or Florida better for preparing for veterinary school?

The University of Maryland, College Park can be an excellent choice for a student who wants a strong science education with animal-focused study but also values access to the Washington, D.C., and Baltimore region. Its animal and avian sciences options can support pre-veterinary prerequisites, while the surrounding area offers possibilities through small-animal practices, shelters, the Smithsonian’s National Zoo, the Maryland Zoo, and biomedical or public-health research settings. Maryland may be especially appealing for someone drawn to companion-animal medicine, animal policy, research, or the intersection of veterinary medicine and public health.

For vet-school preparation, the deciding factors will ultimately be earning strong grades in prerequisite sciences, building sustained hands-on animal and veterinary experience, developing relationships for recommendations, and keeping costs manageable. UF offers the more concentrated veterinary ecosystem; Maryland can be a compelling fit for a student who will take initiative in a broader urban and research-oriented setting.
