Is UMD or Howard University better for preparing for a health professions career?

Howard University is likely the stronger choice for a student who wants an undergraduate environment closely organized around health-professions pathways. Its on-campus College of Medicine, College of Dentistry, College of Pharmacy, College of Nursing and Allied Health Sciences, and Howard University Hospital create a direct health-sciences ecosystem that is unusual for an undergraduate institution. That proximity can make it easier to find mentors, health-focused student organizations, clinical exposure, and a peer community with similar professional goals.

Howard also has a particularly meaningful legacy in training Black physicians and other health professionals, so students interested in health equity, community medicine, and serving historically underserved populations may find its mission reflected in coursework, programming, and clinical settings. Being in Washington, D.C., adds access to public-health organizations, federal agencies, hospitals, and community health work.

UMD College Park offers excellent preparation too, especially for students drawn to biomedical research. Its proximity to NIH, FDA, and other research institutions in the Maryland-D.C. region can be a major advantage for securing lab experience, and its large university structure provides broad science course options.

For professional-school admission, your grades, science foundation, sustained clinical service, research or other meaningful experiences, and strong recommendations will matter far more than the school name alone. But for built-in health-professions culture and direct access to multiple professional health programs, Howard has the clearer edge.
