Should I choose the University of Georgia or Florida State for political science?

The biggest practical difference is location: Florida State puts you in Tallahassee, steps from Florida’s Capitol and state agencies, while Georgia offers the broader School of Public and International Affairs experience in Athens, a major college town with strong connections across Georgia and Washington, D.C. For a student who wants state-government internships during the academic year, FSU has a real built-in advantage. UGA can be especially appealing for students interested in public affairs, international affairs, policy, or combining political science with another SPIA program.

At FSU, the proximity to the legislature, governor’s office, courts, lobbying organizations, and nonprofits can make it easier to build a resume through regular-semester internships. That access is particularly valuable if you may pursue Florida politics, public policy, campaigns, or government relations after graduation. Tallahassee also gives political science students a setting where state politics is visibly part of campus life.

UGA’s political science program benefits from SPIA’s interdisciplinary environment and its connections to public service, policy, and international affairs. Athens has a more distinct campus-town atmosphere than Tallahassee, and UGA may offer a wider social and academic ecosystem if you want flexibility to explore adjacent fields such as economics, public administration, journalism, or international affairs. For careers outside Florida, especially those connected to Georgia, Atlanta, or national policy, UGA’s network may be more useful.

For political science specifically, I would choose FSU if you are drawn to hands-on state politics and can see yourself using Tallahassee internships early and often. I would choose UGA if its cost is comparable and you prefer its SPIA setting, Athens experience, or a path that leans more toward broader public affairs and opportunities beyond one state.
