Should I choose Arizona State or the University of Hawaii for warm weather?

For warm weather that supports a comfortable outdoor lifestyle throughout the year, choose the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa. Honolulu stays warm in every season, with daytime temperatures commonly in the 70s and 80s, while trade winds often make the humidity more manageable. Arizona State’s Tempe campus has mild winters and abundant sun, but its summer heat is routinely intense enough to limit daytime walking, running, and other outdoor plans.

At UH Mānoa, students can realistically use beaches, hiking trails, outdoor dining, and campus green spaces most months, though they should expect humidity and frequent rain showers, especially near the lush Mānoa Valley. The campus is also close to Waikīkī, Diamond Head, and Oʻahu’s beaches, so ocean-based activities can be part of ordinary student life.

ASU offers a dry desert climate, which many people prefer to tropical humidity. Fall, winter, and spring in Tempe are especially pleasant for patios, biking, sports, and exploring the Phoenix area. From roughly late spring through early fall, however, temperatures can become dangerously high during the day, and students often schedule outdoor activity early in the morning or after sunset. Monsoon season can also bring brief but dramatic storms, dust, and flooding.

Hawaiʻi also has more variable microclimates than its reputation suggests: Mānoa can be noticeably rainier and cooler than nearby beach areas. Still, for someone whose priority is reliably warm weather without a long season of punishing heat, UH Mānoa provides the more comfortable day-to-day outdoor experience.
