The biggest practical tradeoff is that Temple places you in a major city from the moment you leave campus, while ASU’s Tempe campus offers a lively, walkable college district within the larger Phoenix metro area. ASU’s Tempe campus is centered around Mill Avenue and connects to downtown Phoenix and other Valley destinations by light rail, but the surrounding feel is more campus-and-college-town than nonstop city.

For everyday urban exploration, Temple has the edge. Philadelphia offers dense neighborhoods, museums, music venues, restaurants, internships, and civic or cultural events in close proximity, and public transit is a realistic part of student life. The city’s walkability and rail network make it possible to build routines beyond campus without needing a car, although students should be thoughtful about street awareness and use campus shuttles, walking escorts, and transit strategically, especially at night.

ASU offers a very social, active environment around campus, particularly along Mill Avenue and in downtown Tempe. The light rail makes Phoenix accessible, but Phoenix is more spread out and many of its neighborhoods and attractions are easier to reach with a car or rideshare.
