Should I Apply Stanford Restrictive Early Action or Duke Early Decision?

Choose Duke Early Decision only if Duke is clearly your first choice and its net price is affordable based on Duke’s financial-aid information. Duke ED is binding: if admitted, you must withdraw other applications and enroll, except in the limited circumstance that the aid package makes attendance unaffordable. Stanford Restrictive Early Action is nonbinding, so it is the better route for a student who genuinely wants to compare Stanford, Duke, and other regular-decision options before committing.

Duke ED fits a student who has done enough research to say, without needing an admissions comparison, that Duke’s collaborative campus culture, strong school spirit, and particular academic or preprofessional opportunities feel like the right four-year home. Applying ED can also make sense when a family has run the net price calculator, understands the likely cost, and would be happy to end the college process with a Duke admission. Do not use ED merely because you think it is a strategic advantage while still hoping Stanford will work out.

Stanford REA fits a student for whom Stanford is a top choice but not an automatic commitment over every other college. Its restrictive policy means you ordinarily cannot apply early to other private U.S. colleges, including Duke ED, but you can still apply to public universities through their nonbinding early programs and later apply to Duke Regular Decision.
