Is Georgetown or UBC the better undergraduate value for a U.S. student?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Georgetown gives a U.S. student much stronger day-to-day access to Washington, D.C., employers and a U.S.-based alumni network, while UBC offers a respected research-university experience plus a potential Canadian work pathway, but at international tuition and Vancouver housing costs. Georgetown’s net price can be far below its published price for U.S. citizens who qualify for need-based aid; UBC’s aid for international students is more limited and often merit-based. That means the actual financial-aid offers, not the sticker prices, should drive the comparison.

For careers centered on U.S. policy, international affairs, government, law, nonprofits, finance, consulting, or media, Georgetown has a meaningful location advantage. Internships during the academic year in D.C. can become full-time opportunities, and its alumni connections are especially useful in those fields. Its smaller undergraduate setting can also make faculty access and advising feel more personal than at a very large public research university.

UBC is an excellent choice for students drawn to a large, globally oriented research campus, particularly in STEM, environmental fields, and programs with established co-op options. A UBC degree is well regarded in the United States, but a student aiming to return to the U.S. should be more intentional about pursuing U.S. internships and recruiting. Graduating from UBC may also allow access to a Canadian post-graduation work permit, subject to the rules in effect at graduation, which can be valuable for someone who wants to begin a career in Canada.

For most U.S. students planning to build their careers in the United States, Georgetown is the better value when its net cost is reasonably close to UBC’s all-in cost. UBC becomes the more compelling choice when it is substantially cheaper after aid and exchange-rate considerations, or when the student genuinely wants Canadian post-graduation options and prefers its larger research environment.
