If your net costs are similar and you want broad access to Bay Area industries, UC Berkeley is worth choosing over UIUC; for computer science, engineering, or a substantially lower-cost UIUC offer, the advantage is not decisive. Berkeley combines exceptional strength across engineering, business, economics, the sciences, humanities, and public policy with an unusually deep alumni presence in California technology, finance, research, and startups.

Location is Berkeley’s clearest differentiator. The campus is close to San Francisco and Silicon Valley, which can make it easier to pursue term-time internships, startup work, research collaborations, and networking during the academic year rather than only over summers. Berkeley’s campus culture is also especially oriented toward entrepreneurship, public-interest work, and interdisciplinary exploration.

UIUC is not a lesser academic option in technical fields. Its Grainger College of Engineering and computer science programs are deeply respected by employers and graduate schools, with major research activity and strong recruiting; a focused CS or engineering student can reach the same high-level outcomes from UIUC. UIUC’s large technical community and structured engineering ecosystem may actually feel more straightforward than Berkeley’s highly competitive course environment.

Cost and day-to-day experience can outweigh prestige differences. Berkeley housing is expensive and competitive, while UIUC’s college-town setting tends to offer a more self-contained campus life and can be financially preferable depending on residency and aid. Compare four-year net price, not just tuition: choosing UIUC with markedly less debt is often the more valuable decision, since both universities open strong academic and career doors.
