Pepperdine vs. University of South Florida for an Undergraduate Finance Degree

I’m a high school senior deciding between Pepperdine and the University of South Florida, and I’m interested in studying finance. I want to choose the school that would better prepare me for finance internships and an early career after graduation.

The biggest practical tradeoff is geography and cost: Pepperdine offers a smaller private-school experience and connections centered on Southern California, while USF places you in Tampa’s growing business and financial-services market and will often be far less expensive, especially for Florida residents. For finance internships, location matters because employers frequently recruit students who can work locally during the academic year. A substantially lower debt burden can also matter more than modest differences in school name recognition when starting a finance career.

USF’s Muma College of Business provides a more direct, large-scale finance pathway, with the advantages of a major urban campus, a broad business-school alumni base, and access to Tampa-area banks, wealth-management firms, corporate finance roles, and financial-services employers. It is particularly practical for a student who wants to build internship experience early, take advantage of a larger recruiting ecosystem, and may remain in Florida or the Southeast after graduation.

Pepperdine can be compelling for students targeting Los Angeles, especially careers connected to wealth management, real estate, entertainment-business finance, or smaller firms where networking is more personal. Its smaller classes and Malibu location can make it easier to develop close faculty and peer relationships, but students need to be proactive about commuting, networking, and pursuing internships across Los Angeles.

For most students focused specifically on finance internships and early-career preparation, USF is the more practical choice, particularly if it is meaningfully cheaper or you see yourself working in Florida. Pepperdine is worth choosing when its cost is manageable and you have a clear reason to build your network in Southern California.
