William & Mary vs. San Diego State: Which Has the Better Social Life?

For a more visibly active, party-oriented social scene, San Diego State is the clearer choice. Its larger student body, prominent Greek life, Division I athletics, and location in San Diego create frequent built-in opportunities for weekend plans, campus events, and off-campus socializing.

William & Mary’s social life is active too, but it is smaller-scale and more community-centered. Because many students live near campus and the school has strong traditions, clubs, and residential connections, friendships often form through organizations, shared routines, and recurring events rather than a large party circuit. It can feel especially welcoming for students who prefer knowing people well over constantly meeting crowds.

SDSU also benefits from its urban setting: beaches, restaurants, concerts, internships, and neighborhoods around San Diego can become part of students’ social lives. That comes with more independence and sometimes more effort to navigate a large campus, while William & Mary’s Williamsburg setting concentrates much of student life around campus itself.

Greek organizations have a more noticeable presence in SDSU’s social culture. At William & Mary, student organizations, campus programming, and traditions tend to play a comparatively larger role in how students connect.
