At McGill, many restaurants, cafés, museums, festivals, neighborhoods, and nightlife options are reachable on foot or by Metro. At UBC, campus life is strong and the ocean, beaches, and outdoor spaces are close, but trips to most of Vancouver’s urban activity require a bus ride.

Montreal offers the more immediate student-city experience. McGill is beside downtown and close to the Plateau, Old Montreal, the Quartier des Spectacles, and Mount Royal. The Metro makes it easy to explore beyond campus without a car, and the city’s dense layout supports walking, cycling, inexpensive food options, live music, and frequent cultural events. Winter is a real factor, though: students still use the city year-round, but daily walking and social plans can take more effort in the cold.

Vancouver is especially appealing for students who define city life partly through nature. UBC students can spend time at Pacific Spirit Regional Park, Wreck Beach, Spanish Banks, and nearby waterfront areas, while downtown Vancouver, Kitsilano, Granville Island, and North Vancouver are accessible by transit. The main limitation is convenience: UBC does not have a SkyTrain station on campus, so buses are the usual link to the rest of the city, and late-night or spontaneous outings can feel less seamless than they do from McGill.
