Is UIUC or Wake Forest more affordable for an Illinois resident after financial aid?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that UIUC starts with a much lower in-state price, while Wake Forest can become competitive only when its need-based grant package or a major merit scholarship substantially closes that gap. As an Illinois resident, you may also be eligible for Illinois MAP Grant support at UIUC, which cannot be used at Wake Forest.

Wake Forest’s private-school aid can change the comparison for students with substantial demonstrated need or recipients of its highly competitive merit awards. Do not assume that a school’s promise to meet demonstrated need means it will cost the same as UIUC: colleges use their own formulas and may assess home equity, noncustodial-parent information, or business assets differently.

Run each school’s current net price calculator using the same family financial information, then compare the actual annual net cost after grants and scholarships, not loans or work-study. Absent an unusually strong Wake Forest aid or merit offer, UIUC is likely to be more affordable for an Illinois resident; Wake Forest is worth serious consideration if its final grant package brings its net price close to or below UIUC’s.
