How do Lehigh and Tulane compare in terms of campus location and surrounding area?

The biggest practical difference is that Tulane places you in a large, distinctive city with everyday access to New Orleans neighborhoods and culture, while Lehigh offers a more self-contained campus experience in a smaller city. Tulane’s Uptown campus is leafy and residential, beside Audubon Park and close to the shops and restaurants around Maple Street, Freret Street, and Magazine Street. Lehigh sits on South Mountain overlooking Bethlehem, with a more traditional campus boundary and a hillier layout.

At Tulane, students can walk to nearby food, coffee, parks, and parts of Uptown, then use the St. Charles Avenue streetcar or rideshares to reach the French Quarter, downtown, and other neighborhoods. The area feels active, warm-weather-oriented, and woven into the city, though New Orleans is spread out enough that many destinations beyond Uptown are not practical walks. The surrounding neighborhood is attractive, but students should still use normal city awareness, especially at night.

Lehigh is close to Bethlehem’s SouthSide, where students can find restaurants, cafes, small venues, and the arts district around the former Bethlehem Steel site. The walk downhill from campus is manageable, but the climb back up is noticeable, and Bethlehem does not provide the same depth of nightlife, transit, or neighborhood variety as New Orleans. Philadelphia and New York City are reachable for occasional trips, but they are not part of daily student life.

For a student who wants a campus embedded in a major city and expects to explore restaurants, music, parks, and neighborhoods regularly, Tulane has the more immersive location. For someone who prefers a defined, scenic campus with a smaller downtown nearby and less day-to-day urban intensity, Lehigh is likely the more comfortable choice.
