Columbia fits a student who wants New York City to function as an extension of campus. Its Morningside Heights campus is in Manhattan, with subway access nearby and neighborhoods, internships, museums, restaurants, performances, and events available without needing a car. Although Columbia’s main campus has gates, quads, and a recognizable academic center around Low Library, the city’s pace and density are always immediately present.

Lehigh fits a student who wants a more self-contained residential college environment while still being near an active small city. Its main campus sits on South Mountain above Bethlehem, creating a distinctly separate, scenic campus with hills, green space, traditional residence life, and views over the city. Students can walk or travel down to Bethlehem’s SouthSide for food, coffee shops, arts venues, and the SteelStacks area, but the local setting is far smaller and quieter than Manhattan.

At Lehigh, the social and academic center of gravity is more likely to remain on campus and in the surrounding Bethlehem community. New York City and Philadelphia are reachable for occasional trips, but they are not part of ordinary walk-out-the-door life.
