How does admissions selectivity compare between UIUC and Duke?

The biggest practical difference is that Duke is highly selective across nearly every undergraduate applicant pool, while UIUC’s difficulty changes substantially with the program you choose. At UIUC, Computer Science and several engineering, business, and design-related programs can be exceptionally difficult to enter, whereas many other majors have a more accessible admissions path. Duke evaluates applicants through a broadly holistic process rather than making selectivity hinge as sharply on one intended major.

For a student applying to a non-CS, non-engineering UIUC major, Duke should be treated as the more selective school by a clear margin. Duke expects outstanding academic preparation, strong course rigor, and compelling contributions beyond grades; even applicants with excellent credentials face considerable uncertainty. Its admissions process also does not offer an equivalent “less selective major” strategy in the way students sometimes perceive at large public universities.

UIUC should not be labeled simply a safety or target based on its overall reputation. Categorize it by your specific first-choice major and college. An applicant to UIUC CS, for example, should regard the application as highly selective and unpredictable; an applicant to a less capacity-constrained major may have a meaningfully different outlook.

For list-building purposes, Duke belongs in the reach category for virtually all applicants. UIUC can range from reach to target, and occasionally safer, depending on your intended program, Illinois residency status, academic record, and the strength of that program’s applicant pool.
