UW can feel personal after a student finds a department, research lab, living-learning community, or organization, especially in smaller upper-level courses. Its size also means broader course offerings, more campus activity, and access to the resources of Seattle. But that connection is less automatic: students often have to be proactive about attending office hours, joining communities, and building a consistent social circle.

For the specific goal of a personal, close-knit day-to-day college experience, Rice offers the stronger small-school feel. UW can provide meaningful communities within a much larger setting, but Rice’s scale and residential-college structure make connection to peers and professors a more built-in part of student life.
