Which campus is more beautiful: UIUC or UC Santa Barbara?

The biggest tradeoff is that UC Santa Barbara offers a dramatic coastal setting and a relaxed, resort-like outdoor feel, while UIUC offers a more traditional, expansive Big Ten campus with classic architecture and mature trees. UCSB sits beside the Pacific, with beaches, the Campus Lagoon, mountain views on clear days, and many paths built around biking and walking. UIUC’s central Quad, red-brick academic buildings, and tree-lined green spaces create a polished collegiate atmosphere.

Students who prioritize scenery and being outdoors tend to find UCSB more visually striking. The campus is relatively compact and connects easily to the beach, so a normal walk to class can include ocean views, palms, eucalyptus trees, and sunsets. Its setting is unusually memorable, though the surrounding Isla Vista area is denser, more student-oriented, and less manicured than the core campus.

UIUC is enjoyable to walk around in a different way. It feels more like a substantial university town, with a large, active campus, architectural variety, and places such as the Main Quad, Japan House gardens, and the Arboretum.
