How different is the campus weather at UIUC compared with the University of Florida?

These campuses feel dramatically different across the academic year. UIUC in Champaign has a four-season continental climate: cold, windy winters with regular snow and ice, a variable spring, warm summers, and a noticeable fall. UF in Gainesville is humid subtropical, with long hot, humid, rainy summers and short, mild winters where snow is essentially not part of campus life.

UIUC suits a student who enjoys seasonal change or does not mind planning around winter. From roughly late fall through early spring, students regularly need insulated coats, boots, gloves, and layers; wind can make walks across the open campus feel colder than the thermometer suggests. Winter weather can affect biking, walking, and the appeal of outdoor social life, although campus remains active and buildings are well connected by transit and indoor spaces. Spring can arrive slowly, with alternating warm and cold stretches.

UF is more comfortable for someone coming from a mild climate who wants to avoid true winter, but its summer heat is a serious tradeoff. Gainesville’s warm season is long, and humidity can make even routine walks feel intense. Afternoon thunderstorms are common in the warmer months, so students often plan around rain, carry an umbrella, and accept that outdoor activities may be sweaty or interrupted. Air conditioning matters much more at UF than winter gear.

The academic calendar changes the experience somewhat. At UIUC, the fall semester begins warm but ends in winter conditions, while the spring semester starts cold and gradually becomes pleasant. At UF, fall and spring are often attractive outdoor seasons, but August, September, and much of late spring can still be hot and humid. Gainesville can also receive heavy rain and storm impacts during hurricane season, though it is inland rather than directly on the coast.
