Which Has a More Urban Campus Vibe: Arizona State or Temple?

The biggest tradeoff is that Temple places students inside a dense, working city neighborhood with Philadelphia immediately around campus, while Arizona State’s Tempe campus is part of a lively metro area but feels more like a large, self-contained college district. At Temple, daily life includes city blocks, public transit, rowhouses, local businesses, and the broader Philadelphia environment beyond the campus gates. At ASU Tempe, students are close to restaurants, apartments, Mill Avenue, and major events, but the campus has a more traditional university layout and a stronger college-town social atmosphere.

Temple’s Main Campus sits in North Philadelphia and is connected to Center City and other neighborhoods by SEPTA subway, bus, and rail. Students can realistically use Philadelphia for internships, museums, concerts, dining, and neighborhood exploration without needing a car. The immediate area also reflects the complexities of an urban campus: it is busier, more varied, and requires greater awareness of surroundings than a campus buffered from the city.

ASU’s Tempe campus is urban in the sense that it is woven into the Phoenix metropolitan area, with light rail access to downtown Phoenix and nearby development. Still, many students’ routines center on campus, Mill Avenue, and the student-heavy neighborhoods around Tempe. It does not create the same feeling of living in the middle of a historic, dense city.

For the more distinctly urban day-to-day campus vibe, Temple is the clearer choice. ASU Tempe offers plenty of city access and activity, but Temple more fully makes Philadelphia part of ordinary student life.
