I’m a high school senior comparing UIUC with UW, and one option would cost my family significantly more after financial aid. Both have strong programs in my intended major, so I’m trying to decide whether the more expensive school provides enough additional value to justify the cost.

UIUC and UW are both respected public research universities, so paying substantially more does not automatically buy a meaningfully better undergraduate outcome.

The exception is when the expensive option has a concrete advantage for your exact path: direct admission to a limited major, a substantially stronger curriculum in your specialty, funded research you can realistically access, or location-based recruiting you intend to use. Compare the net four-year cost, not just one year, and pay close attention to loans. A large difference financed through borrowing can limit graduate school, relocation, and career flexibility.

Unless the higher-cost school offers that kind of specific, verifiable advantage in your intended major, choose the lower-cost option.
