Is Duke worth the higher cost than UC San Diego?

For a significantly higher net price, Duke is not automatically worth more than UC San Diego; UCSD is an excellent choice, particularly for science, engineering, computing, and pre-health students. Duke’s premium can make sense only when the added cost is manageable without substantial family strain or high borrowing. A degree from UCSD will not close off major graduate-school or career paths.

Duke offers a more undergraduate-centered environment. Its residential campus culture can make it easier to build close relationships, take on leadership roles, and find structured support. UCSD is a much larger research university, so students often need to be more proactive about seeking professors, labs, and community, though its college system provides smaller academic and residential communities within the larger campus.

Career access is one of Duke’s clearest advantages for students targeting fields such as investment banking, consulting, certain national business roles, and highly network-driven industries. Duke’s alumni network and on-campus recruiting presence can create a more direct path into those areas. UCSD has especially strong connections to Southern California’s technology, biotechnology, health-care, and research ecosystems, and a motivated UCSD student can reach excellent outcomes in those fields through internships, labs, and recruiting.

Academically, UCSD can be every bit as compelling for technical and research-oriented interests. Its depth in STEM, proximity to major research institutes and life-sciences employers in San Diego, and large-scale research opportunities are meaningful strengths. Duke may feel more flexible and intimate for students who want to combine technical study with public policy, global health, humanities, or a broad liberal-arts experience.

Paying extra for Duke may be defensible when the difference is modest relative to your family’s resources and you are drawn to its campus culture or recruiting advantages. If attending Duke would require substantial loans, reduced savings, or financial stress, UCSD’s value is difficult to beat, especially when both schools offer programs you genuinely like.
