Which college has stronger school spirit: Indiana University or the University of Michigan?

For broad, highly visible, campus-wide school spirit, the University of Michigan is likely the stronger match. Michigan’s football culture dominates fall weekends: the Big House, the Michigan Marching Band, tailgates, and traditions such as singing “The Victors” create an unusually large shared experience. Its identity is especially unified around major varsity athletics.

Indiana University has very real school spirit, but it feels more centered on basketball and on traditions that are distinctly Bloomington. Men’s basketball at Assembly Hall has a passionate, history-conscious following, and games can be a major social event when the program is doing well. The Little 500, IU’s famous student-run bicycle race, is another standout: it produces a kind of student participation and campus excitement that Michigan does not replicate.

Bloomington’s spirit can feel more intimate and student-driven, especially around Little 500 and basketball season, whereas Michigan’s is more consistently amplified by the scale of its football culture.
