Which has smaller classes: UC Santa Barbara or Pomona College?

The central tradeoff is scale: Pomona College is built around small, discussion-based undergraduate classes, while UC Santa Barbara offers the resources and course breadth of a large research university, where introductory courses can be much larger. Pomona’s undergraduate enrollment is only a small fraction of UCSB’s, and its classes are commonly taught as seminars or small lectures with direct professor interaction. At UCSB, especially in popular lower-division courses, students may encounter large lectures supplemented by discussion sections led by teaching assistants.

For a student who learns by speaking up in class and developing relationships with professors, Pomona provides the more consistently intimate classroom experience. Pomona students also have access to courses at the other Claremont Colleges, so the small-school environment comes with a broader menu of classes.

UCSB’s experience varies more by major and course level. Upper-division classes, specialized electives, labs, and seminars can be quite manageable, and professor access is available through office hours, research, and departmental programs.
