University of Miami vs. Pepperdine: Which campus location is better for college life?

For the most active and convenient off-campus college life, the University of Miami has the edge. Its Coral Gables campus puts students near Coconut Grove, South Miami, Brickell, downtown Miami, and a broad mix of restaurants, internships, cultural events, and nightlife. Pepperdine offers a far more scenic, beach-centered setting, but Malibu is quieter and less convenient for frequent city access.

Pepperdine’s campus is hard to beat for immediate natural beauty. It sits in the hills above the Pacific, with Malibu beaches, hiking, and ocean views defining daily life. That setting can feel residential and retreat-like rather than urban: Malibu has local cafés, restaurants, and outdoor activities, but fewer walkable entertainment districts and fewer spontaneous options than Miami.

Miami does not place students directly on a beach, but beaches such as Key Biscayne and Miami Beach are realistic outings, especially with a car or rideshare. In return, students have much easier access to diverse neighborhoods and activities close to campus, including Coconut Grove’s waterfront area and the shopping and dining around Coral Gables. The pace is busier, more international, and more connected to a major city.

Transportation is another meaningful difference. UM is near the Metrorail’s University Station, which gives students a transit link toward downtown and Brickell, although cars and rideshares still make many Miami outings easier. At Pepperdine, a car is much more important; Los Angeles is reachable, but traffic and distance can make trips to Santa Monica, West Hollywood, or central LA feel like planned excursions rather than casual weekday plans.
