How does the University of Miami campus location compare with Georgetown’s campus location?

For day-to-day access to a dense, walkable city, Georgetown has the more urban campus location; the University of Miami offers a greener, more self-contained campus with access to the distinct lifestyle of greater Miami. Georgetown sits in Washington, D.C.’s historic Georgetown neighborhood, while Miami’s main undergraduate campus is in Coral Gables, a separate and largely residential city southwest of downtown Miami.

Georgetown students can walk to the shops, restaurants, waterfront, and residential streets around M Street and Wisconsin Avenue, and D.C.’s museums, internships, government institutions, and other neighborhoods are relatively close. The campus itself has a defined, traditional feel, but it is woven into the city rather than isolated from it. One limitation is that there is no Metro station directly at the campus, so students often use buses, rideshares, or walk to reach rail service.

UM’s Coral Gables campus is known for its tropical landscaping, palms, and a more relaxed residential setting. The nearby area includes Miracle Mile, Coral Gables restaurants, and Coconut Grove, but most students will use a car, rideshare, shuttle, or transit to reach Brickell, downtown Miami, South Beach, or many of the region’s beaches. Miami is geographically spread out, so city access is less spontaneous and more dependent on transportation than it is at Georgetown.

The social atmosphere differs as well: Georgetown puts students near an active neighborhood and the everyday energy of D.C., with especially strong access to policy, nonprofit, and cultural opportunities. UM makes it easier to have a classic campus-centered experience while drawing on warm weather, outdoor life, Latin American and Caribbean culture, and the broader Miami area on weekends or planned outings.
