At ASU, especially the Tempe campus, you can get to places like Papago Park, Tempe Town Lake, and local desert trails pretty quickly, but a lot of the most dramatic outdoor spots in Arizona take more planning and usually a car. At CU Boulder, nature is woven much more directly into daily life because trails and foothill access are right by campus, and students regularly hike, run, bike, and climb without turning it into an all-day outing.

For the specific kind of routine outdoor access you described, CU Boulder has the clearer edge. Boulder is famous for students heading to Chautauqua, the Flatirons, Boulder Creek Path, and nearby canyon trails on ordinary weekdays, not just on weekends. The setting makes it easy to be outside often, even if you only have an hour or two between classes or in the evening.

ASU still offers real outdoor options, and the desert landscape is distinctive and underrated. You can absolutely hike year-round for much of the year, mountain bike, and explore spots around the Phoenix metro area. But the experience is more urban and spread out, and the extreme heat for part of the year can make spontaneous daytime outdoor time less practical.

If climbing is important, Boulder is also stronger for convenience and culture. The area has a very established outdoor scene, plus quick access to both hiking and climbing communities. ASU students can find that too, but it usually takes more intention and transportation.
