For finance careers, is Santa Clara University or UPenn the better college choice?

I’m trying to decide between Santa Clara and UPenn, and my main goal is to get into finance after college. I know both schools can lead to good opportunities, but I’m not sure how much the name, recruiting, and alumni network actually matter for breaking into finance.

I’m hoping to understand which school is generally stronger for finance careers.

The biggest practical tradeoff is access: Penn puts you in one of the strongest undergraduate finance pipelines in the country, while Santa Clara can work well for finance too but usually requires more self-driven networking and is strongest regionally, especially in the Bay Area. Penn’s Wharton brand is deeply recognized by banks, buy-side firms, and corporate finance employers, and on-campus recruiting there is built for students aiming at investment banking, private equity, asset management, and top finance-adjacent roles. Santa Clara has solid outcomes, particularly for accounting, corporate finance, fintech-related paths, and West Coast employers, but it does not offer the same automatic national reach or recruiting volume.

If your goal is high-finance roles like investment banking or elite buy-side paths, Penn is the clearer choice. The combination of Wharton’s curriculum, employer presence, alumni network, and student organizations creates a much more direct route into those jobs. Even outside Wharton, Penn students benefit from the university’s overall reputation and finance ecosystem.

Santa Clara is not a weak option at all. Its location in Silicon Valley can be valuable for corporate finance, venture-related work, and finance roles tied to tech companies, and the alumni base is loyal in Northern California. But for the most competitive finance tracks, you would likely need to hustle earlier and harder for internships, technical prep, and networking than a comparable student at Penn.

Penn gives you a wider set of doors, a more established recruiting machine, and a far easier starting position for top-end finance opportunities.
