Santa Clara University vs Purdue University for finance careers

I'm trying to decide between Santa Clara and Purdue, and my main goal is to break into finance after college. Both seem solid, but I keep seeing different opinions on how much the school name matters versus networking and internships.

I’m a high school senior looking for the option that would give me the best path into finance recruiting and early career opportunities.

The biggest practical tradeoff is geography and recruiting access versus scale and cost. Santa Clara puts you in Silicon Valley, where proximity can help with internships during the school year and alumni connections in West Coast business circles. Purdue gives you the reach and resources of a much larger university, with a broader national alumni base, but it is not sitting in the middle of a finance hub the way Santa Clara is.

For finance specifically, Santa Clara tends to make the most sense if you are aiming at corporate finance, fintech, venture-adjacent roles, or finance jobs tied to the Bay Area business ecosystem. Being close to San Jose and San Francisco can matter a lot because students can network and intern more easily while classes are in session. That convenience is a real advantage when recruiting depends on repeated touchpoints and relationship-building.

Purdue can be a stronger platform if you want the structure and brand breadth of a large public university. For a student who is proactive, Purdue can absolutely lead to solid finance outcomes, especially in corporate finance, commercial banking, consulting-related business roles, and other mainstream business paths.

If your target is the most traditional high-finance pipeline, neither school is a classic feeder in the way a small set of top targets are, so your own execution will matter a lot. That means finance clubs, technical prep, internships after freshman and sophomore year, and alumni outreach will be more important than the school name alone at either place. In that kind of situation, location can become a meaningful tiebreaker.

My read is that Santa Clara has the sharper edge for finance careers tied to the Bay Area and for building internships early through proximity, while Purdue offers the bigger overall platform and possibly better value depending on your cost. If finance is the clear goal and you can see yourself building a career on the West Coast, Santa Clara is probably the more direct path. If Purdue is notably cheaper and you are confident you will aggressively pursue clubs, networking, and internships, it remains a very credible choice.
