Is Santa Clara University or the University of Houston better for finance careers and internships?

I’m trying to decide between Santa Clara and the University of Houston and want to focus on finance. I know both schools can lead to good opportunities, but I’m mainly looking at which one has the stronger reputation for finance, recruiting, and internships.

I’m a high school senior trying to choose the school that would give me the best path into the finance field.

For finance specifically, Santa Clara University usually has the edge if you want easier access to internships during the school year and a stronger pipeline into West Coast employers. Its location in Silicon Valley matters a lot: students can reach internships in venture capital, corporate finance, fintech, investment operations, and accounting-related finance roles without leaving the area.

Santa Clara tends to fit the student who wants a more traditional private-school business environment, smaller classes, and a campus culture where networking is built into the experience. For finance careers, that can be especially useful early on because referrals, alumni access, and professor connections often matter a lot for landing first internships. If you are interested in corporate finance, wealth management, fintech, or finance roles tied to tech companies, Santa Clara is especially well positioned.

University of Houston makes more sense for the student who wants strong value, a major-city setting, and access to the Houston economy. Houston is a serious business hub, and UH students can find opportunities in banking, energy finance, commercial banking, real estate, and corporate finance.

UH is often the better match for someone who is cost-conscious, self-directed, and comfortable doing more of the legwork on networking. In Houston, internships can be very good, but the path may depend more on how aggressively you pursue student orgs, employer events, and local connections. That can work really well for students targeting Texas firms or energy-related finance.

If your question is strictly about finance reputation, internship convenience, and undergraduate recruiting momentum, I would lean Santa Clara. If affordability is a big factor and you would be happy building your career in Texas, University of Houston becomes much more compelling.
