It has a large U.S.-style research university system with many labs that regularly use undergrads, formal programs that fund or organize research, and a campus culture where emailing professors for openings is common. Edinburgh is a major research university too, but its undergraduate structure is typically more specialized and less centered on broad early research participation.

One big difference is how undergrad research is built into the campus system. At UIUC, undergraduates can find faculty projects through department listings, research support offices, honors pathways, and summer programs, and many majors encourage students to join labs before senior year. In practice, that usually means more visible entry points and more expectation that undergrads will seek research as part of their college experience.

Another differentiator is the academic model. Edinburgh’s programs tend to be more fixed and academically focused from the start, which is excellent for depth, but undergraduate research often becomes most formalized later through dissertations, independent projects, or specific departmental relationships.
