Which is better for return on investment: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or University of Georgia?

I’m trying to compare these two schools mainly from a value standpoint, not just overall reputation. I want to understand which one is more likely to pay off in the long run based on cost, starting salaries, and job opportunities after graduation.

I’m looking at them as a current high school student who wants to make a practical decision about where a degree would be worth the money.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: UIUC often delivers stronger earnings and recruiting power in high-paying fields, but UGA can be the smarter financial return if your cost is much lower, especially with in-state tuition or strong merit aid. UIUC has especially strong employer pull in engineering, computer science, data-related fields, and some business areas, while UGA tends to shine more on affordability for Georgia residents and solid outcomes across business, public affairs, and pre-professional paths. From a pure ROI lens, the answer changes a lot based on your major and your net price, not just the school name.

If you are considering engineering, CS, or other technical majors, UIUC has a clear edge in long-term payoff. It has a national recruiting footprint, very strong internship access, and unusually deep employer recognition in those areas. For students entering those fields, the salary upside can be large enough to justify a higher price tag, though that depends on how much debt you would need.

For business, economics, communications, biological sciences, or many pre-law and pre-med type routes, the comparison is closer. UGA can offer excellent value if you get in-state pricing or merit aid, because graduating with less debt can matter as much as a somewhat higher starting salary. A slightly lower paycheck paired with much lower borrowing can produce the better real-world return.

Job opportunities after graduation are good at both schools, but UIUC’s reach is broader nationally, while UGA is especially well connected in the Southeast. That matters if you want to work in Atlanta or stay in Georgia, where UGA’s network is very useful. UIUC tends to have more upside for students targeting major tech, engineering, or quantitative employers across multiple regions.

So the practical verdict is this: UIUC is more likely to have the higher ceiling for ROI, especially in engineering, CS, and certain technical or quantitative majors. UGA is more likely to be the better value purchase when the cost gap is substantial, particularly for a Georgia resident or a student not entering one of UIUC’s highest-paying fields. The most important comparison is your expected major and your actual out-of-pocket cost at each school.
