University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign vs WashU for undergraduate research opportunities

WashU has the edge for undergraduate research access. It is smaller, much more undergraduate-focused in day-to-day advising, and known for making it relatively straightforward for motivated students to connect with faculty and labs early. UIUC absolutely has enormous research strength, but the size of the university and the scale of some departments can make the process feel more self-directed and competitive.

At WashU, undergrads often benefit from a lower student-to-faculty environment and a campus culture where professors expect undergraduates to seek out research roles. That matters a lot if you are proactive but not yet highly experienced, because getting a first opportunity often depends on how reachable faculty feel and how much mentoring capacity labs have for newer students.

If you already know exactly what niche you want and are comfortable pushing through a large-system search, UIUC can be outstanding. But for a student mainly asking where it is easier to get meaningful undergraduate research traction without arriving with a big resume, WashU is the more favorable option.
