Should I choose Arizona State University or the University of Houston for a marketing major?

I’m trying to decide between Arizona State and the University of Houston for marketing. I want to pick the school that would give me the better overall experience for preparing for a career in marketing, not just the one with the nicer campus.

I’m a high school senior and both schools seem like solid options, but I’m having trouble comparing them in a way that actually matters for my major and future job opportunities.

For marketing, Arizona State often makes more sense for a student who wants a very large business school, broad national name recognition, and lots of structured career resources. ASU’s W. P. Carey School of Business is one of the university’s biggest strengths, and marketing students benefit from a deep employer network, many business student organizations, and a large alumni base spread across major cities. If you want a campus experience that feels more traditional and a business program that is very visible within the university, ASU has a real edge.

ASU is especially appealing if you are still exploring which side of marketing fits you best, such as digital marketing, analytics, sales, branding, or consumer behavior. A bigger program usually means more electives, more specialized clubs and competitions, and more chances to meet recruiters who hire beyond the local market. For someone who may want flexibility to work in Phoenix, Los Angeles, Chicago, or other large job hubs after graduation, that reach can matter.

The University of Houston fits a different kind of student well: someone who wants to study in a major city and build connections while already living in a huge business environment. Houston’s location is a practical advantage because internships can be easier to pursue during the school year, not just over the summer. If you are proactive and like the idea of networking early with local companies, UH can turn that into a strong launchpad.

UH can be especially attractive if cost is lower for you, or if you see yourself staying in Texas after college. The Bauer College of Business has solid industry ties, and being in Houston gives you exposure to a diverse, fast-moving market where healthcare, energy, retail, real estate, and entrepreneurship all create marketing opportunities. For a student who is independent, career-minded, and ready to use the city itself as part of the education, UH can be a very smart pick.

If your goal is the most polished business-school ecosystem and a more traditional college experience, I’d lean ASU. If your goal is to plug into a major metro area early, keep building local experience, and possibly establish yourself in Texas, UH is very compelling. For marketing specifically, ASU has a slight advantage on overall program visibility, while UH has a strong real-world location advantage.
