Cal Poly vs Georgia Tech for engineering prestige: which one is more respected by employers?

The biggest practical tradeoff is national brand versus hands-on reputation. Georgia Tech has the broader engineering name recognition across the country and internationally, while Cal Poly is especially respected for producing graduates who are ready to contribute quickly because of its learn-by-doing approach. In employer terms, that usually means Georgia Tech carries more immediate prestige on the school name alone, but Cal Poly has a very strong reputation, especially with engineering firms in California and on the West Coast.

Georgia Tech is one of the most established engineering schools in the U.S., and many employers instantly recognize it as a top engineering institution. That matters most if you want a degree whose reputation travels easily across regions, industries, and large national recruiting pipelines. For some recruiters, seeing Georgia Tech on a resume sends a stronger prestige signal before they know anything else about you.

In a head-to-head on prestige alone, I would give the nod to Georgia Tech. Cal Poly is still an excellent engineering name, but Georgia Tech is the one more likely to get immediate recognition from a wider range of employers.
