Cal Poly or University of San Diego for business: which is better?

The biggest practical tradeoff is hands-on, career-focused public-school value at Cal Poly versus a smaller private-school experience with stronger personal attention at USD. For business, Cal Poly is often viewed as having the stronger broad reputation, especially in California, because of its learn-by-doing approach and solid employer recognition. USD still has a respected business school, but it is usually seen as more regional and more defined by its private-school setting than by having a clearly stronger business brand.

Academically, Cal Poly’s Orfalea College of Business is known for being practical and structured around real-world projects, collaboration, and quantitative work. That tends to appeal to students who want a more career-direct path in areas like accounting, finance, operations, and analytics. USD’s Knauss School of Business offers smaller classes and often more direct faculty access, which some students really value, but its business reputation is not typically considered ahead of Cal Poly’s.

In overall reputation, Cal Poly has a very strong name with California employers, especially for students who want to stay on the West Coast after graduation. It is also widely recognized beyond business because the school has a strong identity around applied learning and professional readiness. USD has the advantage of a polished campus, smaller scale, and a strong alumni community, especially in San Diego, but the school’s name usually does not carry quite the same business-specific weight as Cal Poly’s.

So if the question is simply which is more broadly regarded as better for undergraduate business, Cal Poly is the clearer answer. USD can be the right choice for someone who wants the private-school environment and smaller class experience, but on academics plus business reputation alone, Cal Poly comes out ahead more often.
