For a business major, is Cal Poly or Michigan State the better choice overall?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and both Cal Poly and Michigan State are on it for business. I know they each have different campus vibes and strengths, but I’m mainly trying to figure out which one is generally the better choice for a business major.

I care most about things like academics, recruiting, and whether the degree has strong value after graduation.

The biggest practical tradeoff is West Coast, hands-on business education at Cal Poly versus a larger, more nationally connected business ecosystem at Michigan State. Cal Poly is known for its learn-by-doing approach and tends to have especially strong name recognition in California, while Michigan State’s Broad College of Business offers a bigger university network, more established business recruiting infrastructure, and stronger reach across multiple regions. If academics, recruiting, and long-term degree portability are the main criteria, Michigan State has the broader overall edge for business.

Academically, both are solid, but they feel different. Cal Poly’s strength is applied learning, smaller-program feel, and a practical culture that employers often like, especially for students who want to work in California after graduation. Michigan State, through Broad, has a more traditional business school setup with a larger alumni base, more business-specific resources, and stronger visibility in areas like supply chain, accounting, finance, and corporate recruiting.

On recruiting, Michigan State usually comes out ahead. A large Big Ten university with a well-known business school tends to draw more employers across consulting, finance, accounting, and large corporate roles. Cal Poly can absolutely place well, especially on the West Coast and in companies that value its practical training, but its recruiting footprint is usually more regional and less expansive.

For degree value after graduation, location matters a lot. In California, Cal Poly carries real weight and can be an excellent launchpad. Nationally, though, Michigan State’s business brand is easier for more employers to recognize right away, and that matters if you want flexibility in where you work.

For a business major with a primary focus on academics, recruiting, and broad post-grad value, I’d lean Michigan State. Cal Poly is a very good option, especially if you want California and a hands-on undergraduate experience, but Michigan State offers the more versatile business platform.
