Arizona State vs University of San Diego for internships: which has better access to opportunities?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus proximity: Arizona State offers a much larger employer network and a higher volume of recruiting because of its size and location in the Phoenix metro, while the University of San Diego gives you access to the San Diego market in a smaller, more personal campus setting. ASU has a very broad alumni base and strong connections across business, engineering, tech, media, and public sector employers in the Valley. USD benefits from being in a desirable internship city with nearby biotech, defense, startups, nonprofits, and business offices, but the school itself is smaller.

If your priority is starting early and casting a wide net, ASU usually has the edge. Phoenix also makes part-time semester internships more practical because ASU is deeply embedded in a large metro area with many employers that regularly take interns.

USD can still be strong, especially if you are proactive and want to build closer relationships with professors, advisors, and local employers. San Diego is an attractive market, but internships there can be more competitive because many students from multiple colleges are targeting the same companies. In a smaller school environment, support can feel more individualized, but you may need to do more self-directed networking off campus rather than relying on the volume of opportunities coming directly to you.

By field, the comparison can shift a bit. ASU is especially well positioned for business, engineering, journalism, communications, and tech-related internships tied to the Phoenix area. USD has nice advantages for areas tied to San Diego’s economy, including biotech, marine-related work, nonprofits, international business, and some defense-adjacent opportunities.

For pure access to internship opportunities and early-career connections, I’d give ASU the advantage. USD becomes more compelling if you specifically want to be in San Diego and you prefer a smaller private-school environment where networking can feel more personal, even if the opportunity flow is not as large.
