Ohio State vs Iowa for biology: which is better for an undergraduate pre-med student?

Ohio State has the edge for an undergraduate biology student on the pre-med track. Its biology offerings are broader, the research ecosystem is larger, and the scale of its medical and life sciences campus creates more ways to plug into labs, hospitals, and specialized coursework early on. For a student who wants maximum academic options and lots of possible pre-med experiences, that matters.

One concrete difference is academic breadth. Ohio State has a very large biology and biomedical landscape, with multiple departments and related majors that connect to pre-med interests, including neuroscience, microbiology, molecular genetics, and public health.

Research access is another reason I’d lean Ohio State. Because the university is so large and tied to a major academic medical center, there are simply more labs, more faculty, and more kinds of projects happening at once. Iowa absolutely has strong research, especially with its health sciences presence, but Ohio State tends to offer a wider volume of opportunities across basic science, clinical research, and translational work.

For pre-med specifically, Ohio State also benefits from the size and visibility of Ohio State Wexner Medical Center and its surrounding health sciences network. That can make it easier to find shadowing, volunteering, and medically adjacent experiences, though you still have to be proactive. Iowa’s campus can feel more manageable and personal, which some students prefer, but Ohio State gives you a bigger platform if you are ready to navigate a larger system.

The main argument for Iowa is undergraduate feel. It may be easier to build close relationships in a somewhat less sprawling environment, and that can help with mentoring and recommendation letters. But if the question is which school is stronger overall for biology plus pre-med opportunity, Ohio State is the more compelling choice.
