For an undergraduate biology major, the University of Iowa usually offers the stronger academic and research environment if your priority is depth in the major and preparation for grad, medical, or other professional school. Iowa has the advantage of being tied closely to a major research university and academic medical center, which tends to create more lab options, more faculty research, and more health-related opportunities. San Diego State can still be a very good choice, especially if you want a large public university in Southern California with a more campus-centered feel and access to regional science opportunities.

I’d point Iowa toward the student who wants biology embedded in a broad research ecosystem from early on. The university’s connection to its hospitals, medical research, and graduate programs can matter a lot for biology majors who may want neuroscience, genetics, human physiology, microbiology, or pre-health experiences that go beyond classroom labs. That kind of setting often makes it easier to find faculty doing varied research and to build a resume for PhD, MD, PA, or other advanced study.

SDSU fits a student who wants a strong public-school experience with biology opportunities but may care just as much about location, weather, and the day-to-day campus vibe. SDSU has solid science teaching, and being in San Diego can help with internships and biotech exposure over time. For some students, that external location advantage is real, especially if they are proactive about finding opportunities off campus.

Where I’d be a little cautious is assuming the two are identical inside the biology department. Iowa tends to have more of the classic research-university infrastructure that biology students often benefit from, while SDSU can feel more dependent on how actively you seek out professors, labs, and outside experiences. If your main question is which school is more likely to give you a stronger biology foundation with clearer pathways into research and professional-school preparation, Iowa has the edge.

SDSU becomes more compelling if you know you would thrive much more in San Diego personally, or if cost and quality of life strongly favor it. But on the biology major itself, especially for research access and academic depth, I would lean University of Iowa.
